Location and care
To ensure that your May flowers thrive, you should choose the right location. Peonies prefer a sunny to partially shaded spot with well-drained soil, while lilies of the valley also thrive in the shade under shrubs. Water regularly, but avoid waterlogging, as they are sensitive to too much moisture. A light fertiliser at the beginning of the flowering period can also promote flower formation.

PEONY

Gerberas belong to the Asteraceae family and delight with their bright flowers in red, orange, yellow, pink or white. They are particularly popular as cut flowers because their large heads stay fresh for a long time and instantly add freshness to any room. Whether as a single stem in a simple glass or in a colourful bouquet, gerberas are real mood enhancers.
ALLIUM
The genus Allium comprises over 800 species and belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family. You are most familiar with Allium in the form of onions, garlic and chives, which are indispensable in kitchens around the world. Allium species are also attractive ornamental plants in gardens. Their spherical inflorescences add decorative accents in spring and summer and are popular with bees and butterflies.

In the merry month of May, nature awakens in full bloom. Bright tulips and hyacinths join the garden dwellers in the first days of May. From mid-May onwards, lilies of the valley and ranunculus open up, adding romantic accents with their delicate white and pastel-coloured flowers. Peonies, which are in full bloom from late May to June, are also particularly popular with flower lovers.
When is it worth giving flowers as a gift?
Special occasions in May offer perfect opportunities to give flowers as gifts. Mother's Day, which is traditionally celebrated in Switzerland on the second Sunday in May, is one of the classic dates. A bouquet of fresh tulips or lilies of the valley expresses gratitude and appreciation. A colourful bouquet of ranunculus or hyacinths is also a lovely surprise for a spring birthday or to mark the start of the gardening season.
To ensure that the flowers last as long as possible, cut the stems with a sharp knife and place them in fresh, lukewarm water. A special cut flower food will provide a good supply of nutrients. Avoid direct sunlight and place the vase in a cool location.
