Flowers in June – summer is finally here
June is a very special month for all gardening enthusiasts: the days are getting longer and the temperatures are rising. During this time, numerous flowers show themselves at their best. You can now decorate your garden or balcony with a variety of blooms and enjoy new splashes of colour every day.
Roses begin their main flowering phase in June. Thanks to their wide range of colours and shapes, they contribute to a romantic atmosphere. Bed roses and English roses in particular have a wonderful fragrance and invite you to linger. Peonies also continue to delight with opulent, lush flower heads in white, pink or red.
Many perennials are now opening their flowers. Daylilies (Hemerocallis) form striking, funnel-shaped flowers in bright yellow, orange or red. Also popular are delphiniums (Delphinium), whose tall flower spikes in shades of blue and lilac reach up to the sky. Lupins and carnations (Dianthus) also add bold splashes of colour and attract insects.
Magnificent hydrangeas (Hydrangea) already display large, spherical inflorescences in white, blue or pink in June. If you want a fragrant garden, you should also consider lavender: its purple panicles exude an intense fragrance and are extremely easy to care for. Poppies and cornflowers complement the variety of flowers with bright red and blue tones.
Of course, sunflowers (Helianthus) are a must, their giant yellow flowers making an impressive display later in the summer. With this selection of early bloomers, you can create a lively June garden that heralds the arrival of summer.
LARKSPUR
Larkspur (Delphinium) delights amateur gardeners with its tall, colourful inflorescences. They are available in white, blue, pink and purple and add impressive accents to flower beds. Varieties such as “Pacific Giant” and “Belladonna Hybrids” are particularly popular. The height usually varies between 120 and 180 cm, but there are also very small species that only grow to 10 cm.
ASTER
Asters (genus Aster) belong to the Asteraceae family, one of the most species-rich families in botany. They are characterised by their distinctive flower heads, which are composed of many small individual flowers and add bright splashes of colour to the garden in autumn. They provide important sources of pollen and nectar for bees and butterflies at a time when few other plants are in bloom.
LIMONIUM
Sea lavender (Limonium) is a salt-tolerant plant that is particularly popular in coastal regions and rock gardens. Its delicate pink, blue or purple inflorescences are not only eye-catching, but also provide valuable food sources for bees and butterflies. Sea lavender is particularly popular in dried bouquets and as a cut flower, as its flowers retain their colour for a long time after drying.
Flowers in June – Summer solstice and Rose Month
Popular June flowers
In June, nature reaches its peak and numerous flowers unfold in all their splendour. The month of roses is particularly well known, when a wide variety of roses in all shades can be admired. Roses symbolise passion and affection and are ideal as gifts to express feelings. Peonies also bloom in June, adding elegance with their opulent, fragrant flowers. Other typical representatives of the summer season are delphiniums (Delphinium), which add vertical accents to flower beds with their tall clusters of flowers, and hydrangeas, which unfold their dense flower balls from the end of June.
Occasions for giving flowers in June
With the summer solstice on 21 June, June is the perfect time for outdoor celebrations. A colourful bouquet of roses, peonies and applause plants is the perfect gift for garden parties and midsummer night celebrations. June also plays a central role in the wedding season: newlyweds will be delighted with stylish floral decorations and bridal bouquets with seasonal flowers. In addition, birthdays, anniversaries or simply the desire to give a small gift are further occasions to enhance special moments with a colourful arrangement.
Tips for choosing
When buying flowers, make sure that the stems are freshly cut and that the flowers have not yet fully opened. This will ensure that roses and peonies retain their shape and last longer in water. Combine flowers of different heights and shades to create depth and dynamism. A delicate sprig of lavender or green tendrils as an accent will give the bouquet a natural, summery charm.
